After 13 years of waiting and only a handful of official communications, Grand Theft Auto VI’s marketing is now shifting into high gear.
As GTA VI finally approaches release, Rockstar Games is ramping up its marketing efforts, with activations piling up in Miami, across the US and beyond, both online and, most notably, in the real world (see our dedicated post analyzing the marketing strategy). This article documents every activation surrounding this historic launch, alongside key figures and some of the backlash the campaign has faced.

All the GTA VI Marketing Activations
Trailers and the website as owned media
Two trailers in nearly three years turned each drop into an event, and fans did the amplification.
Worldwide, Dec 5, 2023. Trailer 1 dropped a day early after a low-quality leak. It revealed the title, the leads Jason and Lucia, and the Vice City setting, and drew 93 million YouTube views in 24 hours.
Worldwide, May 6, 2025. Trailer 2 arrived with 70 screenshots and character pages on the official site. Rockstar Games counted 475 million views across platforms in 24 hours, the biggest trailer debut at the time.
Worldwide, Jun 18 and 25, 2026. Cover art and the two editions were revealed, then pre-orders opened: $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate, with a “Vintage Vice City” pack for orders placed before November 20. Physical copies ship as a code in a box, with no disc. The official store confirms that pre-load begins November 10, 2026.
Worldwide, Aug 27, 2026. “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” 27 minutes of gameplay captured on PS5, premiered on Netflix six hours before YouTube. It logged 31.1 million views in four days and ranked No. 1 in 87 of 93 countries. Live watch parties peaked at nearly 4 million concurrent viewers, and Twitch suffered an outage. Neither company has disclosed the terms; insider Tom Henderson put Netflix’s payment at around $100 million.
Worldwide, Oct 15, 2026. The launch trailer premiered “Flower in a Hurricane,” an original track by Justice featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.
Press and creators: access as currency
Worldwide, Aug 26, 2026. Dazed. The “New Idols” issue put Jason and Lucia on the cover, with original artwork made for Dazed, fashion designed by Rockstar’s in-house team, and rare interviews with Rockstar’s Head of Development Rob Nelson and SVP of Narrative Rupert Humphries. In the same story, Rockstar publicly apologized for the delays.
France, Sep 2, 2026. Trois Couleurs. Issue 227 of Trois Couleurs, the film magazine of the French cinema chain mk2, put Jason and Lucia on its cover under the headline “The best film of the year?” (“Le meilleur film de l’année ?”), with an exclusive: “We saw GTA VI behind closed doors at Rockstar Games”. Trois Couleurs. was the only French-language media outlet granted access to the place where the most eagerly anticipated video game of the decade has been developed. It’s a striking choice for a cinephile magazine usually devoted to auteur cinema. On top of Dazed and LOVE in fashion, GTA VI now lands in film culture, positioned as a rival to the year’s movies.
Worldwide, Sep 29, 2026. Game Informer. A 14-page cover story with new screenshots and developer interviews, made free to read in the Game Informer app.
France, Oct 5, 2026. LOVE Magazine. Issue 27 featured Jason and Lucia on the cover, with new screenshots. At €25, pre-orders sold out in minutes through the French distributor.
Worldwide, early Oct 2026. PR boxes. Rockstar sent journalists and content creators a thank-you package with a pink tote bag and stickers (Kotaku).
France, Oct 23, 2026. A documentary on public TV. France Télévisions released “GTA, le jeu no limit,” a documentary on the franchise’s 30-year history, timed for GTA VI’s launch. It follows how GTA went from a pariah rejected by politicians and the media to an iconic work of pop culture, and how a series that borrowed from film, rap and TV became a pillar of global culture itself, satirizing the American dream while feeding on it. Rockstar Games Co-Founder Jamie King, who worked on GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas before leaving the studio in 2006, is among the interviewees. The film is not a Rockstar commission, but it shows how far the hype reaches: even French public television is getting in on the countdown.
For the very first time, the film brings together GTA’s pioneers: Keith Hamilton (Lead Programmer on the original GTA), Paul Farley (Designer on the original GTA), Gary Penn (DMA Design’s Creative Director) and Jamie King (Rockstar Games Co-Founder). Their revelations are set alongside the insights of journalists and experts Pierre Trouvé, Marie Lou Dulac and Chris Klippel, as well as testimonials from fans such as rapper Naza and gamer Heavenfox. Watch the documentary here.
Written by Quentin Margot and Sonia Dauger, based on an idea by Quentin Margot. Directed by Sonia Dauger. Narrated by Fadily Camara. Produced by Alexandra Macdonald for Galatée Films. Edited by Sébastien Séga. Art direction by Laurent Seince. Cinematography by Guillaume Borrelli. Original score by Dimitri Leroy.
US, Oct 28, 2026. South Park. Rockstar slipped exclusive gameplay into an unexpected place: the latest episode of South Park. In one scene, the kids discover GTA VI through footage no one had seen before. True to the show, it’s a dog relieving itself, Jason picking up the result and throwing it in a passerby’s face. The clip is narrated by Tish Hicks, the voice of the GTA V gameplay trailer, and the end credits read: “Special thanks: Grand Theft Auto VI footage courtesy of Rockstar Games, Inc.”. A game that mocks pop culture showing up in a show that mocks pop culture: a perfect fit for GTA’s satirical tone, three weeks before launch.
UK, Oct 29, 2026. Edge. The British magazine Edge, a reference for the industry, devotes its issue 430 (Christmas 2026) to a 16-page special on GTA VI, after visiting Rockstar’s Edinburgh studio. It includes exclusive interviews with the developers and screenshots made for the magazine, all wrapped in a double-sided gatefold cover showing Jason and Lucia. Rockstar also plays the reach card: the full feature is free to read online on GamesRadar+ on release day, and UK subscribers can get a free collector’s edition while stocks last.
Miami becomes Vice City
Miami, Sep 10 to Oct 1, 2026. The rooftop sign. Rockstar paid Miami-Dade County $975,000 for a “Welcome to Vice City” sign on the Kaseya Center, home of the Miami Heat. The price sat $25,000 under the $1 million threshold that requires a commission vote. The ~4,690 sq ft sign was airlifted by helicopter on September 22, lit on October 1, and stays up until April 11, 2027. It faces planes landing at Miami International Airport and appears on Heat broadcasts.
Miami, Oct 2026. Inside and around the arena. The county deal also covers in-arena advertising and promotional exterior signage at the Kaseya Center.Rockstar paid for production and installation, plus a separate “contribution” to Basketball Properties, the arena’s operator.
Bright lights. Vice City.

Miami, from Oct 15, 2026. Downtown banners. The City of Miami approved up to six oversized GTA VI banners for up to $1.2 million. Miami is proposing to allow Rockstar to place GTA 6 billboards around the city, between October 15 and December 31. Rockstar Games would pay $202,000 per banner ($1.2 million total). The promotional displays still need approval from Take-Two Interactive.
COMING SOON IF TAKE-TWO BUYS IT.
Miami Beach, Oct 13–15, 2026. Beach and sky. “Vice City” umbrellas and beach chairs with the “VI” logo arrived on South Beach, supplied by beach concession operator Boucher Brothers under a deal worth up to $4 million to the city. Overhead, planes towed banners for “NINE1NINE”, the game’s parody of Miami nightclub E11EVEN, recreating a shot from Trailer 1.
Miami, Oct 15–16, 2026. The cars. Eight real cars customized as in-game models drove through Miami and Key Biscayne, with Leonida plates. A Coquette (Corvette base), a Cheetah (Ferrari base), an Emerus, a Tempesta, a Manana, a Buccaneer, and a Lamborghini in Vice City police livery. Several reports credit West Coast Customs, which built a Bravado Banshee for Rockstar in 2013. The real GTA 6 cars spotted in Miami:

The developer of GTA 6 designed several real supercars that replicate the appearance of their in-game counterparts and presented them on the streets of Miami.
These vehicles were equipped with Leonida state license plates and moved in a tight convoy, which included a police Lamborghini bearing the insignia of the fictional Vice City Police Department (VCPD). Additionally, the convoy featured a McLaren styled after the in-game Progen Emerus.

Miami, Oct 13, 2026. Wynwood Walls. Rockstar partnered with the open-air museum to offer Miami-Dade residents free admission through 2028. Ten new murals, by artists including DENIAL, FAILE, Gons and Audet, Lady AIKO, Ron English and Tristan Eaton, are exhibited in Wynwood and will also be visible in GTA VI gameplay.

Florida, Oct 12 to Nov 18, 2026. The blimp. Goodyear’s “Wingfoot Three” airship, repainted with Vice City branding, left Ohio on October 12 and has been spotted over Miami. It will appear at Hard Rock Stadium on several days, hover above Homestead-Miami Speedway during NASCAR Championship Weekend (November 7 to 9, the first title race there since 2019), and fly over the Kaseya Center during the Heat’s “Vice City game” on November 18.
Miami, from Oct 2026. Freebee shuttles. Freebee, the free electric shuttle service that runs across Miami, has wrapped about 20 of its vehicles, electric vans and Teslas, in designs straight out of the game, including Weazel News “Never Miss Information”, ‘Manatees Vice City’, and ‘Welcome to Vice City’ liveries. The campaign covers six areas of the city, including Wynwood and Miami Beach, and runs until January 7, 2027, well past launch. The shuttles are ad-supported and free to ride, so Vice City’s brands now move through the city alongside residents and tourists.

Miami, Oct 21–22, 2026. Burger Shot and Cluckin’ Bell. GTA’s two iconic fast-food chains, parodies of Burger King and Taco Bell, opened real stands in the Kaseya Center food court during Miami Heat games, with staff in branded shirts and caps. It doesn’t come cheap: a cheeseburger, fries and drink combo costs $28.50 before tax. According to fans who went, the burgers are the arena’s usual menu repackaged in GTA VI branding. Aside of the beer brands (see below), Vice City’s fast food chains now crosses over into real life too.
Miami, Oct 31, 2026. The Skyviews wheel. The Skyviews Miami Observation Wheel at Bayside Marketplace, on the downtown waterfront, now glows in the game’s pink-to-purple sunset gradient, with a “Vice City” logo at its hub. The wheel also appears in GTA VI, in a Vice City version of Bayside. Once again, Rockstar brings a landmark from the game’s map back to its real-life original, and the wheel’s lights make it visible from across Biscayne Bay at night.

Miami, Oct 31, 2026. Pier 5 becomes “Pier VI.” A few steps from the wheel, Bayside Marketplace’s “Pier 5” has been renamed for the occasion: a pink neon “VI,” in the game’s logo style, now covers the “5” on its marlin-topped sign. On the lawn in front of the waterfront stage, a real Yamaha jet ski wrapped in the game’s pink, blue and white livery sits on a “Welcome to Vice City” base, with a “VI” logo on the hood and “Vice City” on the bow. It’s the perfect photo spot for tourists, and one more vehicle from the game made real, after the supercars, the Freebee shuttles and the blimp.

Miami, Oct 30–31, 2026. Vice City nights. For Halloween weekend, two Wynwood nightclubs, The Dirty Rabbit and Mad Club, went full Vice City with themed parties and posters in the game’s style, with guests encouraged to come dressed as Vice City characters. Even the city’s nightlife is getting into character.

Miami Beach, Nov 1, 2026. Tony Montana’s Cadillac. On Ocean Drive, in front of South Beach’s Art Deco hotels, a vintage white Cadillac convertible appeared in GTA VI colors: pink racing stripes, “VI — Welcome to Vice City” decals and “GTA VI — Goodtime State” license plates. Behind the wheel sits a Tony Montana doll in his white suit from Scarface, the 1983 film that inspired the original GTA Vice City. Three Halloween skeletons ride as passengers. It’s a nod that connects Miami’s two great crime fictions, the movie and the game, on the exact street where both were set.

Miami, Nov 2026. The airport, the port and the streets. Despite the pushback, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava closed a package of promotional deals with Rockstar worth nearly $4 million. The Central Garden courtyard outside Miami International Airport’s Terminal E is now bathed in GTA VI’s pink and blue lights, PortMiami’s giant cranes glow in the same colors across the bay, and some county traffic signal boxes are wrapped in the game’s palette. Elsewhere, chairs with the “VI” logo appeared on The Underline, the linear park under the Metrorail line. “With millions of people around the world waiting for this release, we have an opportunity to make sure Miami-Dade benefits from that attention,” the mayor said.
Miami, Nov 6, 2026. E11EVEN becomes NINE1NINE. The loop is complete. NINE1NINE, the nightclub GTA VI uses to parody Miami’s famous E11EVEN, and whose banners were already being towed over South Beach in October, is now opening in real life. For one night, E11EVEN Miami rebrands as “NINE1NINE Vice City” for an “IRL grand opening” headlined by Florida rapper Flo Rida, “in celebration of GTA6”. The real club was parodied by the game, and now it turns into its own parody to promote that game.
Miami, Nov 18, 2026. A Night in Vice City. The night before launch, the Heat will host the Milwaukee Bucks as “Vice City,” with never-worn uniforms, a custom court and a national ESPN broadcast. Tickets start at $100.
Street art, buses and giant billboards
Brooklyn, early Oct 2026. Colossal Media. Colossal hand-painted a Jason and Lucia mural at Wythe Avenue and North 11th Street in Williamsburg, the same corner that carried a GTA V mural in 2013. The partnership goes back 22 years, as Colossal Media itself put it: “Twenty-two years ago, we painted our first campaign with our very first client, Rockstar Games. Two decades later, we’re back at it for GTA 6. From San Andreas in 2004 to Grand Theft Auto VI in 2026, tradition continues. #AlwaysHandpaint”. Colossal has also hand-painted Rockstar murals for titles including GTA: Chinatown Wars. Read our interview of the Colossal Media team.
New York, Chicago and Miami, Oct 2026. Buses. Big Bus tour buses wrapped in GTA VI artwork are running in all three cities. In Miami, an “I Love Vice City” bus is also in circulation.
Paris, from Oct 6, 2026. A giant wrap went up panel by panel on one of the Mercuriales towers at Porte de Bagnolet, visible from the Périphérique ring road. It is Europe’s first major stop for the campaign.
Miami, Oct 11, 2026. NFL. During the Miami Dolphins vs Cincinnati Bengals game at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, the stadium screens displayed an “In for VI” message with Vice City-style palm trees, along with a panel showing the GTA VI logo and its November 19 release date. On top of football, NBA and NASCAR, GTA VI also moves into the NFL, the most-watched sport in the US. Hard Rock Stadium is also where the Vice City blimp is scheduled to appear in the coming weeks.
New York and Los Angeles, Oct 15–16, 2026. A GTA VI LED billboard lit up Times Square, and a GTA VI mural was finished on Hollywood Boulevard. In “Los Santos” it is located on the historical The Lofts at Hollywood & Vine building, at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd and Vine St, at the following address: 6253 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028.
Miami, Oct 19, 2026. Fake ads, real screens. Rockstar took over IKE Smart City touch-screen kiosks along NW 26th Street in Wynwood, the City of Miami’s digital street furniture, with ads for brands that only exist in the game. “Pfister”, GTA’s take on Porsche, sells its Comet S2 Cabriolet with “Go topless.” Kronos Celestial watches promise “Always come early.” Kowalski jewelry tells passersby “Suddenly you are big enough.” Weazel News, the series’ recurring TV channel, pledges “Never miss information.” Two nightclubs compete for attention: The Vault (“Your secrets are safe with us”) and another, VYB, billed as “Vice City’s hottest night club” (“What will you catch?”). Each ad carries a “Vice City” signature and a QR code. It’s classic GTA satire: double-entendre taglines that parody advertising, running on real ad screens just a few blocks from the Wynwood Walls murals. Fiction and reality blur once again. Barcelona, Oct 25, 2026. El Clásico. During FC Barcelona vs Real Madrid, one of the most-watched club matches in the world, the pitchside LED boards at Barça’s stadium alternated between the “Grand Theft Auto VI” logo and “Coming November 19,” in the game’s pink-and-purple sunset colors. The ads ran right behind the goal and along the touchline, so they appeared on screen during live play, in front of a global TV audience. After the NBA in Miami and NASCAR in Homestead, GTA VI reaches European soccer fans less than a month before launch.
Paris, Oct 30, 2026. Stade de France. Three weeks after the Mercuriales tower, Rockstar hit another Paris landmark. The “Stade de France”, France’s national stadium in Saint-Denis, home to the national soccer and rugby teams, put on Vice City colors with a giant banner on its facade. The stadium announced it itself on social media: “GTA 6 lands at the Stade de France!”. After the Heat’s arena and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, and El Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, GTA VI takes over one more sports venue.
Hong Kong, Oct 30, 2026. The tram. In Asia, the campaign took over a local icon: one of Hong Kong’s double-decker trams, the famous “Ding Dings,” now runs in a full purple and pink GTA VI wrap, with the logo, character artwork and the release date written in Chinese: “2026年11月19日”. Photographed near the Hill Road stop on Hong Kong Island, heading to Causeway Bay, it brings Vice City’s sunset to one of the densest cities in the world. After Tokyo with Sony, it’s another sign the campaign is going global, not just American and European.
Milan, Oct 31, 2026. The Derby della Madonnina. Six days after El Clásico, GTA VI moved on to another of European soccer’s biggest rivalries: AC Milan vs Inter in Serie A. During the match at San Siro, the pitchside LED boards alternated between the “Grand Theft Auto VI” logo and “Coming November 19” in the game’s pink and purple colors, and they stayed on screen throughout the live broadcast. Two of Europe’s biggest derbies in a row: Rockstar is buying the moments soccer fans don’t miss.
Melbourne, Nov 2, 2026. Australia. The campaign reached Australia, with giant GTA VI digital screens wrapped around a building in St Kilda, Melbourne. After Tokyo and Hong Kong, it’s one more stop in the Asia-Pacific leg of the launch.
Berlin, Nov 4, 2026. Alexanderplatz. After Paris, the campaign takes over a landmark in Berlin: a giant Jason and Lucia wrap has been installed, window by window, on the facade of the Park Inn hotel, the 37-story tower on Alexanderplatz, one of the busiest squares in the German capital. In Germany, GTA VI ads have also appeared in Cologne and Munich.
Edinburgh, Nov 54 2026. Coming home. Two giant GTA VI banners now hang on a historic sandstone building at the east end of Princes Street, a stone’s throw from Waverley station, Edinburgh’s main train station. One shows the game’s collage-style key art, the other Jason and Lucia’s cover art. The location matters: Edinburgh is home to Rockstar North, the studio that develops Grand Theft Auto. Two weeks before launch, the game is being celebrated in its own hometown, among Edinburgh’s double-decker buses and Victorian facades.
Paris La Défense, Nov 5, 2026. The CNIT. Two weeks before launch, a third Paris-area landmark joins the Mercuriales tower and the Stade de France. A giant Jason and Lucia wrap now covers the curved glass facade of the CNIT, the iconic vaulted building on the La Défense esplanade, Europe’s largest business district, crossed every day by hundreds of thousands of commuters. From the eastern ring road, to the stadium in the North, and the business district on the west, GTA VI now frames Paris on almost every side.
Los Angeles, rumored. Hotel Figueroa. Rockstar painted giant murals of GTA V characters across this downtown hotel, which appears in GTA V as the Hookah Palace. In 2026, the hotel painted over its previous mural, fueling expectations of a GTA VI one. A document claiming to confirm it circulated online but nothing is confirmed yet.
COMING SOON IF DONE. FAN ART OF WHAT IT COULD LOOK LIKE:
Music As A Second Media
Worldwide, Sep 15–17, 2026. Artists posted GTA-style artwork on September 15. The next day, Spotify showed GTA VI billboards in New York, Los Angeles and Miami. On September 17, Rockstar announced “Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album,” 34 tracks made with Atlantic Records, out on November 19 on streaming, CD and vinyl. Three versions are exclusive to the album’s official site: a CD jewel case ($19.98), a splatter-edition vinyl ($49.98) and a limited-edition liquid-filled vinyl ($124.98), which has already sold out. On top of that, Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble and Urban Outfitters each carry their own exclusive vinyl colorway, each with unique new artwork.

Miami, Oct 16–17, 2026. III Points. During the III Points music festival weekend in Wynwood, an official satellite party titled “Welcome to Vice City” was held at Mad Radio Miami, on Biscayne Boulevard. This thematic curation seamlessly extended beyond the main festival grounds into local nightlife venues, bridging the gap between underground electronic music and the iconic, high-energy culture of Miami. The “Welcome to Vice City” satellite party paired intimate dancefloor energy with the festival’s overarching visual and musical identity.

Miami, Oct 20, 2026. GTA beers, brewed for real. Three GTA-branded beer labels from Tripping Animals Brewing, a craft brewery in Doral, near Miami, appeared in the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau’s public database. Two revive the series’ cult in-game brands: Pißwasser Pils, approved on September 29, and Patriot Beer (“Never refuse a Patriot,” 4.2% ABV), approved on October 15. The third is new: “No Mames Vice City Lager”, a 6% lager whose can shows a chihuahua in pink sunglasses wearing a gold “Vice City” chain against a sunset, approved on October 9. All three labels carry the GTA VI logo. The beers are already reaching bars: at Monty’s, A-frame signs read “You’re in… Pißwasser Country!” and promote Patriot Beer, right next to real brands. Rockstar has not officially announced the collaboration. After the cars and the nightclubs, even the game’s beers are crossing over into real life. Photo credits: GTA VI Centre.

Worldwide, Nov 19, 2026. Cactus Jack x Rockstar x Nike. A three-way sneaker collab is reportedly on the way: an Air Force 1 Low from Nike, Rockstar and Cactus Jack, Travis Scott’s label, who’s also on the GTA VI album. Three colorways are planned: “Black & Fire Pink,” “White & Fire Pink” and “Multi-Color.” Listed at $130, it is set to drop on November 19, the same day as the game. The designs haven’t been revealed yet.
Platform partners and paid social
Tokyo, Aug–Sep 2026. Sony featured GTA VI in its “It Happens on PS5” campaign on giant digital screens across Tokyo, and gave it a dedicated theater at Tokyo Game Show 2026, with a 300-inch screen and a vibrating floor.
Worldwide, from Jun 30, 2026. Paid social and sponsored videos. Rockstar Games started its own paid social within days of pre-orders opening. From June 30 to July 6, an Instagram and Facebook ad pushed the Ultimate Edition: “Welcome to Leonida, the state where anything goes… Pre-Order Now on PlayStation 5,” with a “Plays best on PS5” badge. From August 28 to September 2, the day after the Netflix premiere, other ads on these same social platforms promoted ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look’, “Now available on YouTube”, in three versions, targeting 18- to 54-year-olds of all genders in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Poland and other markets. Since the launch trailer’s release, Rockstar has also been running it as YouTube pre-roll ads.
Partners are amplifying the push too. Since October 5, PlayStation (Sony) has been running its own Facebook and Instagram ads for the Ultimate Edition, reusing Rockstar’s copy word for word and sending traffic to the PlayStation Store. From October 7, YouTube is also promoting GTA VI with its own ads, also on Instagram and Facebook, saying “There’s more to GTA VI on YouTube”, with Lucia’s gun removed from the artwork.
Finally, “GTA VI TV Spot” entry also appeared on a Fox affiliate’s schedule in October, but Rockstar Games has not confirmed a TV campaign yet.
Limits And Pushback
Even the biggest launch of the decade runs into rules and politics.
Guns Erased From The Artwork
On the Paris wrap, Rockstar removed Lucia’s pistol, along with her hand, and an assault rifle from the official cover art. The same edit shows up on the Times Square billboard, the Chicago bus and YouTube’s social ads. Design critics noted that the poses lose their attitude without the weapons.
Miami Politicians Push Back
Several Miami-Dade commissioners object to promoting a game about crime in their city. The commission is set to decide on October 20 whether talks can continue for Vice City branding at Miami International Airport, PortMiami and Metromover stations.
- Rene Garcia said the game depicts “Miami like a crime haven” and “like a murder capital,” and questioned why the county accepted only $975,000 from a campaign he believes is worth at least $150 million.
- Danielle Cohen Higgins cited county rules against ads promoting violence, recalling that the county turned down a $10 million naming-rights bid from an adult entertainment company in 2019.
- Roberto Gonzalez said the sign deal “feels” priced to stay just under the $1 million vote threshold.
- Micky Steinberg: “Philosophically, I feel we should not be moving forward.”
- On the other side, Chair Anthony Rodriguez argued, “We recognize it’s just a game,” and the mayor’s Chief of Staff called the campaign “a love letter” to Miami.
Ideas That Didn’t Make It
Earlier proposals were turned down in September: renaming the airport “Vice City Airport,” Vice City manhole covers and branded Metromover cars. The county sheriff opposed the airport idea because the game depicts violence against police. In Miami Beach, Vice City art is allowed on beach chairs and umbrellas, but not on lifeguard towers.
Now, The Real Question: Why?
A rooftop sign bought for $975,000, an NBA team renamed for a night, an album with Keith Richards and Bad Bunny on the radio… All of this for a game the whole world is already waiting for. So why spend a dime on advertising when the earned media is already off the charts? That’s the paradox I unpack in this other article, along with four lessons any brand can take from it, whether or not it has GTA’s budget.
